We have a number of volunteer roles across the Trust, click the links below for more details.

 

Our current roles are:

Chaplaincy Pastoral Volunteer

Hospital Chaplaincy is responsible for the spiritual and religious care of patients, their relatives and staff. Members of the Chaplaincy Team visit patients, of all faiths or none, on request for conversation, prayer or administration of sacraments. 

Duties include:

  • Visiting patients who have previously been identified by the Chaplaincy team
  • Notifying the Chaplains of patients who have requested their service
  • Offering spiritual support to patients, visitors or colleagues, regardless of difference in religion, or any other characteristic

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Dining Companion - Stroke Unit

Part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Clinical Stroke Network, the Stroke Unit provides a range of services including rehabilitation and early supported discharge services. 

Duties include:

  • Preparing patients for meal times
  • Supporting patients during meal times
  • Liaising with staff to record fluid and solid intake

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Gardening and Greenhouse Volunteer - Sensory Garden

The Sensory Garden forms part of our stroke unit. It is open to patients, visitors and colleagues. 

Duties include:

  • General maintenance of the Sensory Garden
  • Planting, repotting and general maintenance of plants and flowers – to be sold in aid of the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity
  • Reporting of any maintenance issues

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Library Trolley Service Volunteer 

The library stocks a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books and audio books, as well as a variety of magazines. A trolley service, run by volunteers, is offered to some wards. Two volunteers are needed for each trolley round. 

Duties include:

  • Selecting and distributing books to wards
  • Issuing books to patients/arranging returns
  • Being a friendly face to patients
  • Recording service usage
  • General housekeeping duties in the Library – including some basic clerical tasks

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Welcome Desk Volunteers / Meet & Greet

The Welcome Desk provides information and assistance to patients and visitors. Volunteers will assist patients, enabling them to reach their destination in a timely, stress-free manner. 

 Duties include:

  • Providing a friendly face for patients, relatives and carers
  • Directing or escorting patients and visitors to departments
  • Wheelchair assistance

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Patient Chaperone - BreathingSpace

BreathingSpace is a community service based in Rotherham for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other respiratory conditions. 

 Duties include:

  • Meeting and greeting patients
  • Escorting patients
  • Assisting with social events

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Patient Support Volunteer - Greenoaks

Greenoaks is an outpatient department for antenatal and gynaecology clinics, including an ultrasound scanning department. 

 Duties include:

  • Keeping patients informed of waiting times
  • Updating the information board
  • Making refreshments
  • Providing a friendly face for patients
  • Obtaining ‘Friends and Family Tests’
  • Pharmacy and laboratory collections
  • Some basic clerical duties

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Pharmacy Volunteer

Pharmacy offer a medicines management service which involves ensuring patients have the right medicines available either through use of their own medicines or by dispensing them from the pharmacy.

 Duties include:

  • Delivery of medication to patients/wards
  • Associated clerical duties

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Rooftop Restaurant Volunteer

The Rooftop Restaurant is a relaxing and spacious environment where patients can spend time with their families/carers away from the ward.   

Duties include:

  • Assisting patients and visitors in the restaurant
  • Clearing and cleaning tables
  • Supporting restaurant staff

 All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Supportive Volunteer - Ward A6

Ward A6 is a specialist medical ward which delivers a number of treatments, including chemotherapy and blood transfusions, to inpatients. 

Duties include:

  • Being a friendly face for patients, relatives and carers
  • Making refreshments and distributing sandwiches
  • Escorting patients
  • Pharmacy collection and drop off

 All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Urgent and Emergency Care Volunteer

The purpose-built Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) provides all urgent and emergency care at Rotherham Hospital. 

Duties include:

  • Providing a friendly face for patients, relatives and carers
  • Assisting with food/refreshment distribution
  • Escorting visitors
  • Keeping patients informed of waiting times
  • Collecting patient feedback

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Ward Assistant - A5

Ward A5 cares for patients with Diabetes, endocrinology patients and patients with complex care needs including dementia.

Duties include:

  • Assisting patients with nutritional needs - including serving meals, helping patients to complete menu requests, providing assistance to patients with cutting food and opening packets
  • Being a friendly face for patients, visitors and carers
  • Meeting and greeting patients and visitors to the unit
  • Assisting staff where required – including making beds, general tidying, Pharmacy collection and drop off

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Patient Support Volunteer – Ward A1

Ward A1 is a 33 bed ward with both male and female patients specialising in cardiology and the care of older people.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring patients stay hydrated throughout the day
  • Assisting patients with preparing for meal times, ensuring hygiene needs are met
  • Supporting patients’ journey by providing a friendly face, engaging in conversation and activities
  • Welcoming new patients
  • Basic clerical duties including answering the phone when needed

All volunteers will be given a full induction and extensive support in their role.

Application process includes: 

Our minimum age to volunteer is 18 years and you must have legal status to work in the UK. A minimum of 9 months commitment to volunteering at the Trust.

Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.

Health and wellbeing health clearance. 

Two character references.

Completion of mandatory and statutory training sessions, prior to starting and required to be repeated annually.

Out of pocket travel expenses incurred when attending to volunteer are reimbursed.
