Pregnancy Advisory Service

If you have found out that you are pregnant and wish to discuss your options regarding a possible termination of pregnancy (also called an abortion), you can self-refer to the Pregnancy Advisory Service on 01709 424542 to make an appointment. We are based in Rotherham Hospital.

When you make the phone call, a few details will be taken by a member of staff to arrange the first consultation (which can either be by telephone or a face-to-face appointment). This first consultation will be a discussion only; we will find out more about you and your medical history, and we can explore what options are available to you. If you decide to have a termination of pregnancy, this can be arranged on a different date.

All information is confidential, and we would not inform your GP routinely.

What happens at the clinic?

After your first consultation, you will be invited to attend the clinic in Rotherham face-to-face. This appointment will involve meeting the staff to discuss what has happened so far, as well as having some blood tests and an ultrasound scan. We will also discuss contraception moving forwards. As there may be a number of things to do, you can expect to spend up to three hours in the clinic.

You may be able to begin the termination of pregnancy on the same day, depending on a number of factors and the method chosen.

You may meet a number of people at the clinic, including our nurses, healthcare support workers, and sonographers. You may also meet a doctor, depending on your medical history.

We can also directly refer to you a counselling service, should you wish to consider this.

What methods of termination are there?

The method available will depend on how many weeks pregnant you are on the day of your procedure, but in general, there are medical methods and surgical methods.

  • Under 10 weeks pregnant
    • If suitable, both medical methods and surgical methods may be offered.
    • Medical termination of pregnancy involves taking two different tablets, 48 hours apart, to cause the uterus (womb) to expel the pregnancy. Depending on your medical history and support, this method can be offered to do at home or whilst in hospital.
    • Surgical termination of pregnancy involves having a suction procedure, either under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic.
  • Over 10 weeks pregnant
    • If choosing the medical treatment, this would be done in hospital (not at home).
    • If choosing the surgical treatment, this would be done under a general anaesthetic. At Rotherham Hospital, we can only do this up until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If requesting a surgical termination of pregnancy after 12 weeks, we would make a referral to another unit/hospital for you.
  • 18 weeks pregnant and over
    • Unfortunately, we are not able to perform termination of pregnancy after 17+6 weeks gestation at Rotherham Hospital (this includes both medical treatment and surgical treatment). However, we would make a referral to another unit/hospital for you.

Contraception

Effective contraception allows you to choose when (if at all) you wish to plan a pregnancy, at a time that suits you best. Therefore it’s an important aspect of your care with us. We can offer all methods of contraception in our service, including the most effective methods, such as implant, intrauterine device (coil), and injection.
